I guess I’ve always been considered an “out of the box” thinker even when I was a kid. I never really went along to much with what others were doing. I wasn’t particularly loud and vocal about it but I quietly went and did my own thing. Since I’ve had my own health hurdles to deal with not going along with the status quo really started to take precedence in my life.
How to be an “out of the box” thinker….
There are several different ways this might take shape where good health is concerned. If you’ve read any of my “Inspiration Sunday” posts these are perfect examples of this type of thinking. It wasn’t until these people took charge of their own life and their own health that they noticed things starting to turn around for the better. God gave us all a noggin and we don’t always have to go along with everything we’re told without first looking at all of the facets ourselves.
When it comes to food….
Lets face it things are much different then when our grandparents were kids. Since food has become an industrialized commodity there is absolutely a level of greed that goes into producing our food. After all the more that is produced, packaged and shipped the cheapest possible way the more money will line the pocket of the producer. Do I think all food is bad that I don’t personally grow? No I don’t but I do think there are land mines that have to be navigated to avoid the products that don’t truly have our health or our families health at the top of the list. We can use this money driven paradigm to our advantage though by not accepting all of the junky convenient pesticide laden foods and forcing them to make healthier versions. Hey if enough people stop buying they will change. The almighty dollar speaks volumes! We are already beginning to see these changes in some instances. Even better yet we could go meet our local farmers and see how they do things and support them by buying from them instead of the large industrial farms. Learning more about GMO’s and why they may not be the most beneficial foods for us is a great way to take a closer look at the food chain in our country. More about GMO’s in a later post.
When it comes to medical care…..
When it comes to medical care I will tread lightly here as I don’t want anyone to misconstrue that I am saying to go against your doctor. But if you are going to a doctor that is unwilling to help you delve into getting to the root cause of your issue and is absolutely against all natural means of improving your health it may not be a great fit. If they are only interested in you taking numerous pills to treat your symptoms, maybe looking into finding a new doctor would help as it did me? I am blown away by this kind of thing in the medical profession. I went to a Rheumatologist for my issues. By the time I was able to get into this doctor my antibodies were no longer showing on blood work which can happen, but he wanted me to take a medication with a laundry list of side effects anyways. Since I was already doing many things that were showing improvements in my situation I decided to go to a functional medical practitioner and under her care I am doing so much better. When I returned to the Rheumatologist I told him that I was feeling better and my symptoms were somewhat alleviated and I would rather wait on taking any medication. He quickly dismissed me and seemed to have no further interest in what I was doing to improve my situation at all. I was quickly ushered from the room actually. Now my “out of the box” brain would be dying to know what steps that person had taken to improve their situation with no medication since I was seeing many suffer daily from a similar plight. If I could glean anything from their results I would love to know to possibly research whether that would help others. That is why being your own advocate is crucial when it comes to your own health.
When it comes to beauty…
Autoimmunity is on the rise these days. Have you ever thought about the amount of junk that women, especially spritz, smear and douse ourselves with daily? Just think about your beauty regime and what you put on your body from the time you wake up until you go to bed at night. More then likely it involves: shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, shaving cream, styling products, sprays, deodorants, lotions, toothpaste, makeup, hair dyes (not daily) and nail polish. Not to mention what we wash our clothes in and other things we might be exposed to in our home such as harsh cleaning products. Women are by far more likely to get autoimmune disease. Although there are many theories as to why that might be, inundating our bodies with toxins everyday for many years could possibly stress our bodies to the point of being more susceptible to these diseases. Our culture dictates to us that beautiful people get ahead and to be beautiful you must use all of these products to accomplish this. I’m not saying to go totally without any sort of products like this but there are healthier products that are made with pure ingredients that don’t cause so much stress on our bodies. Culture would dictate that you have to have the latest and greatest product on the market but consider the fact that maybe you are beautiful just the way you are and while looking your best is something we should all strive for there are ways around doing that without all of the toxins applied to our body everyday. Research and seek out some of these healthier options or do away with some of the ones that just simply aren’t necessary. Your body will thank you.
That’s a wrap….
I hope this hasn’t come across preachy. My goal was just to get you to stop and think. Stop accepting the status quo when it comes to the health of your family and yourself. After all you are your own best advocate when it comes to your health, you can be trusted to do this! Each and everyone one of us has the courage inside to bring about good changes in ourselves and the world we live in. Think out of the box!
So true. We don’t think of all the toxins we come in contact with. I had health hurdles and my docs didn’t seem interested in figuring it out, just told me “take this, it helps some people. We don’t know why.” No thanks. I went to nutrition school just to figure it out myself. Good post.
Thank Christina! I think that may be why many of us get into this career because we are on a quest to get some answers for ourselves and then that evolves into helping others! ?
